Part 1 starts off by helping you to know what information is needed to make the most important decision: “Is my Plan A to stay or to get away?” Knowing when and how to evacuate can be the difference between life and death for those living on waterfront or flood prone zones. From that point on the book goes step by step from sheltering in-place, to stockpiling basics like food and water, and into advanced topics like getting satellite texting on your smart phone. The step on energy is alone worth the cost of the book, as it covers strategies for keeping phones charged, to running refrigerators from a battery, to buying generators, and even creating solar energy home backup system, and more. These 10 Hurricane Prep Steps are concise and actionable.

Part 2 helps you, who have never been in a direct hit by a major hurricane exactly, to know what you may be facing. Understanding something can often help to reduce our sometimes irrational fears and reduce anxiety. This book does NOT try to minimize the danger that hurricanes present to us… in fact, the whole book is written so that more people take logical and effective steps to protect themselves, their families, and their homes. A mindset of safety is super important. This is based on first hand experience of dozens of people who have lived through storm surge, hurricane force winds, and relentless tropical rains. Using the techniques in this book, we have gone through the storms and the days and sometimes weeks of disruption of power, water, and “normal life” as we are all accustomed too. The final chapter, Encouragement, is there to help you cope.

About The Author

Jamie Robe is a Florida man with an enthusiasm for safety. His four children loving refer to him as “Weather Dad”. Having faced over 60 hurricane seasons in Tampa, Florida, this engineer is finally sharing all his storm preparedness wisdom in one place.

Asked what he considers the biggest challenge with hurricane preparedness, the author replied: “Besides the sheer destructive potential of these mega storms, it is undoubtedly the mindset of the people in the path of the storm. With hurricanes, we typically have days, if not weeks of warning. The problem is that they can change course and intensity very quickly. So sometimes we prepare for a major hurricane and it misses or arrives as a weaker storm. This causes “preparation fatigue”, so next time we might not prep as well. I know there is also a tendency to base decisions, like evacuating or not, to our own personal experience or beliefs. Just because a storm hasn’t hit a certain location at a certain strength in your lifetime, can lead to a false sense of safety, unfortunately resulting in some people drowning in their living rooms. This is why planning and preparing ahead of time, when you are calm and thinking logically, can make a big difference.”
